Donald Mosher Award for Colonial Virginia Research Opens 2024 Applications

The BCG Education Fund invites applications for the 2024 Donald Mosher Award, given in recognition of outstanding Colonial Virginia research. The Donald Mosher Award is an annual $500 grant established from funds donated in 2001 by Merrill Hill Mosher, CG®, in memory of her late husband. The award is administered by the BCG Education Fund.

Applications are due 31 December 2023. More details regarding qualifying entries and the application process are available at https://bcgedfund.org/mosher-award.

The award funds scholarly research on colonial Virginia topics in the following categories, none of which are restricted by word or page limitations.

1. A family genealogy meeting the following criteria.
• The genealogy includes a couple and their children residing in Virginia prior to 4 July 1776.
• All male and female descendants are traced for at least three generations.
• Families are placed within the historical context in which they lived.
• The work is fully documented using original sources, with an emphasis on Colonial Virginia research.

2. A study of immigrant origins.
• Focuses on an immigrant settling in Virginia before 4 July 1776 whose origins have not been documented.
• Connects the immigrant to his family of origin.
• Documents and explains all the research steps that proves the connection.

3. A project proposal to provide access to previously unpublished sources.
• Makes available obscure or difficult, previously unpublished Virginia resources emphasizing records that pre-date 4 July 1776.
• Includes an outline and plan for the project.
• Presents a sample of the projected format.
