Research on a man's mysterious second marriage identified his wife as a romance scammer who preyed on Civil War veterans. This case study shows how evidence correlation and reasonably exhaustive research cut through the lies and misdirection in a woman's records to establish her identity and reveal her sometimes deadly deception.

Sharon Hoyt, MLIS, CG, is a genealogy researcher, speaker, and writer who enjoys researching intriguing stories and brick wall cases, particularly those that involve the Civil War. She has spoken at local, regional, state, and national events, and has taught in the SLIG Advanced Evidence Analysis Practicum and the Board for Certification's 2024 "Putting Skills to Work" workshop. Her research has won Family History writing contests sponsored by the National Genealogical Society and the Minnesota Historical Society, and has been published in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, and Minnesota Genealogist. Sharon holds a master’s degree in Library and Information Science.
